Workshop 102 — Reduction and Recomposition: Strip a Finished Arrangement to Its Musical Skeleton, Then Build a Completely Different Arrangement from the Same DNA
Workshop 101 treated an arrangement as a generative system rather than one frozen sequence of notes.
Now we develop the complementary skill:
Can you take a rich finished arrangement apart until only its essential musical DNA remains—and then rebuild something genuinely different from that skeleton?
This is one of the strongest tests of whether you actually understand a piece.
Suppose your existing version contains:
- walking bass
- altered dominants
- fills
- chromatic inner voices
- block chords
- octave melody
- rubato
- counterpoint
- sophisticated voicings
Can you remove almost all of it and still identify:
- melody
- structural bass
- harmonic function
- phrase destinations
- rhythmic identity
- formal architecture?
And then rebuild the same tune as:
- bossa
- sparse ballad
- funk
- stride
- 6/8
- modal version
- contrapuntal arrangement?
The central lesson is:
If you understand the musical skeleton, an arrangement is replaceable. If you only know the arrangement, changing it feels like destroying the piece.
