Workshop 50 — “Nefertiti”: Repetition as Development, Harmonic Motion Under a Fixed Theme, Metric Ambiguity, and Learning to Change the Background Instead of the Melody
We’ve spent several workshops learning how a motif can move against the bar while harmony remains stable.
Now we flip the problem.
What if the melody barely changes, but the accompaniment evolves underneath it?
That is the central compositional lesson behind a “Nefertiti”-type approach.
This is hugely important for arranging because it teaches you to stop thinking:
“How do I vary the melody?”
and start thinking:
“How many different worlds can I place under the same melodic object?”
The main lessons are:
- repeated melody as structural anchor
- accompaniment as the evolving layer
- reharmonization without changing the theme
- changing bass under a fixed top line
- rhythmic reinterpretation of the same phrase
- metric ambiguity without changing note order
- texture as development

Repetition becomes sophisticated when the repeated object stays stable while its context keeps changing.
