Workshop 104 gave us melody.
Workshop 105 gave us its harmonic world.
Workshop 106 gave us an independent bass line.
Workshop 107 filled the middle with inner voices and counterpoint.
Now we face a deceptively difficult question:
How do you turn several good musical ideas into one complete piece?
You can write an excellent 8-bar melody and still have no composition.
You can have:
- beautiful chords
- memorable motif
- excellent bass
- sophisticated counterpoint
and still end up with something that sounds like:
idea → another idea → another idea → stop.
The missing element is form.
The central lesson of Workshop 108 is:
Form is not a container into which music is poured. Form is the listener's evolving memory of what has happened, what has returned, what has changed, what has been withheld, and what still seems unfinished.
