Workshop 101 — Arrangement as a Generative System: Rules, Constraints, State Changes, and How to Design a Performance That Can Recreate Itself
Workshop 100 was the milestone of the one-take arrangement: creating a coherent performance in real time without pre-composing every note.
Now we go one level more abstract.
Instead of asking:
“What should I play in this arrangement?”
we ask:
“What rules would reliably generate a good version of this arrangement every time?”
This is a powerful way to think because it separates:
- the identity of the arrangement
- from any one specific realization
The central lesson is:
A mature arrangement can be thought of as a generative system: a small set of musical rules, priorities, transitions, and constraints that produce many coherent performances without requiring note-for-note repetition.
