Workshop 118 — Memorizing Music as Structure: How to Stop Depending on Finger Memory and Learn a Piece So You Can Recover, Transpose, Reharmonize, and Play It Flexibly
Workshop 117 was about revision: stripping away what is unnecessary until the identity of the piece becomes clearer.
That leads naturally to another question:
Once a piece is finished—or once you have learned an existing tune—how do you actually know it?
Many pianists can “play from memory” but do not truly know the music.
They know:
- hand shapes
- a chain of physical motions
- a particular starting key
- one exact voicing sequence
Then, if something goes wrong:
- they cannot recover
- they cannot transpose
- they cannot skip to the B section
- they cannot play the melody alone
- they cannot explain the harmony
- they cannot simplify on the fly
- they cannot reharmonize
- they may even need to restart from the beginning
That is motor-chain memory.
Useful, but fragile.
What we want is a much richer memory system.
The central lesson is:
To truly know a piece, memorize several overlapping representations of it: melody, scale degrees, bass, harmonic function, form, landmarks, rhythm, and sound. Finger memory should be the final layer—not the only one.
