Workshop 45 — Afro-Cuban Piano: Son Clave, 2–3 vs 3–2, Tumbao, Montuno, and Learning to Place Every Note *Around* the Clave

Workshop 44 taught us to hear 3+3 and 2+2+2 simultaneously.

Now we take that rhythmic independence into a musical system where the underlying organizing pattern becomes much more explicit:

the clave.

This is an important step because clave is not simply “another syncopated rhythm.” It acts more like a rhythmic reference frame. Bass, piano, percussion, melody, and fills can all be different, but their placement makes sense relative to that underlying timeline.

We’ll work with son clave and simplified piano exercises inspired by Afro-Cuban practice. We are not trying to reproduce one particular copyrighted arrangement.

In clave-based music, rhythm has syntax. A note can be perfectly in time yet still feel stylistically misplaced if it ignores the rhythmic architecture around it.
