Workshop 81 — Polychords and Bitonal Hearing: Two Harmonic Worlds at Once, Upper Structure vs. True Polychord, Controlled Clashes, and Making “Wrong” Chords Sound Intentional
Workshop 80 explored harmonic ambiguity: sometimes we deliberately withhold enough information that the listener does not immediately know what the harmony is.
Now we go one step further.
Instead of saying:
“Perhaps this sonority could mean A or B,”
we allow something more radical:
“What if A and B are both audible at the same time?”
This leads us into:

- independent upper/lower harmonic layers
