Write a theme only one or two bars long.

Repeat it eight times.

You may not alter its pitch sequence.

Across the eight repetitions you must use:

  1. tonic pedal
  2. moving bass
  3. chromatic inner line
  4. modal upper structures
  5. different groove
  6. octave/register change
  7. harmonic climax
  8. sparse return

If the listener feels a complete journey while the theme hardly changes, you've succeeded.
