- Pulse is the underlying beat framework; subdivision divides those beats into smaller units such as eighths, triplets, or sixteenths; attack pattern selects which of those possible positions actually receive sounds. The three layers together create rhythmic grammar.
- Rests define where sound is not expected, create breathing space between layers, make syncopated attacks perceptible, and allow bass/chords/melody to interlock rather than continually compete. In many grooves, the silence pattern is part of the hook.
- Syncopation derives its tension from conflict with an understood metric norm. If the listener cannot internally locate the beat or grouping, offbeat attacks are not experienced as displacement—they simply create uncertainty.

When rhythm has its own identity, the music begins moving before harmony has even had a chance to explain why.
