When something feels wrong, troubleshoot in this order:

1. Form

Is section needed?

2. Melody/bass

Do outer voices work?

3. Harmonic function

Is direction clear?

4. Harmonic rhythm

Are changes timed well?

5. Rhythm/groove

Does time feel intentional?

6. Texture/register

Is hierarchy clear?

7. Inner voices/voicing

Are lines smooth?

8. Extensions/ornament

Only now refine color.

This prevents polishing the wrong layer.
