Suppose melody is D over Cm.

D = 9.

Very natural.

Suppose melody is A over Cm.

A = 6/13.

That can push the harmony toward Cm6.

Suppose melody is B.

Now you may hear Cm(maj7).

So the melody may tell you which tonic-minor color to choose.
