When you see a progression like:
D → D♭ → C,
the bass itself gives you a strong clue.
Do not waste time wondering:
“Why is D♭7 there?”
Hear:
chromatic approach to C.
Then notice:
D♭7 is tritone-related to G7.
Everything falls into place.
