91.106Mini-composition exercise

Write a 32-bar rhythmic-counterpoint étude.

Requirements:

  • establish two distinct rhythmic motifs in first 4 bars
  • first state them separately
  • then overlap them
  • one must function as bass material
  • one as melody or comping
  • one rhythmic canon
  • one augmented or diminished imitation
  • one 3-against-4 or 3+3+2 layering
  • one passage with two different phrase-length cycles
  • one synchronized hit used only once before the ending
  • one transition achieved by overlapping old and new rhythmic languages
  • one layer must disappear for at least 4 bars and later return
  • one metric cadence without harmonic cadence
  • final four bars must progressively remove rhythmic layers

The piece should sound like:

several rhythmic personalities negotiating one shared pulse.
