- Because the listener also perceives which notes are emphasized, their relative dynamics, attack character, duration, release, register, and resonance. The same pitches can therefore function as very different musical textures.
- Dynamic level is literal loudness; structural intensity also depends on harmony, chromaticism, register, density, rhythm, and expectation. A quiet moment can therefore be the emotional climax of a phrase.
