24.83Your practical first-ballad formula
If you're handed a simple melody tomorrow, do this:
- Find key.
- Find basic chords.
- Convert triads to 7ths.
- Add 9ths where melody permits.
- Keep LH sparse.
- Put melody clearly on top.
- Use smooth inversions.
- Add one secondary dominant.
- Add borrowed iv near an important cadence.
- Make a 2–4 bar intro.
- Add tiny fills only in gaps.
- End with a deliberate cadence.
That is enough for a convincing first arrangement.
