Suppose the melody holds A.

That A could be:

  • root of Am
  • 5th of Dm
  • 9th of G
  • 6th of C
  • 3rd of F
  • 7th of Bm7♭5

So one melody note can sit over several consecutive harmonies.

This is why the tune can tolerate sophisticated voicing.
