Here is the useful analogy.

In harmony:

a pedal tone keeps the tonal center stable while chords above move.

In rhythm:

an ostinato keeps the meter stable while phrases above move.

So:

rhythmic ostinato = metric pedal point.

This is a powerful way to think.
