93.124Mini-composition exercise

Write a 40-bar/approximately 3-minute solo-piano étude whose form is organized by changes in temporal behavior.

Requirements:

  • establish a clear initial tempo
  • use both half-time/double-time illusion and at least one actual tempo change
  • one genuine gradual ritardando
  • one accelerando with a clearly stabilized destination tempo
  • one fermata on an unresolved harmony
  • one fermata or prolonged silence after resolution
  • one measured silence
  • one free caesura
  • one section with pulse-preserving rubato
  • one section of genuinely free time
  • one re-entry into strict tempo via pickup, bass pattern, or subdivision
  • one tempo transition using metric-modulation logic
  • one harmonic arrival that occurs before metric resolution
  • one metric arrival that occurs before harmonic resolution
  • final section must either dissolve from pulse into free time or crystallize from free time into pulse

The piece should make the listener feel that:

time itself has form.
