13.46Upper structures

Here's a preview of a more advanced jazz idea.

Play:

LH: G + F

which establishes G7.

RH: A C♯ E

A C♯ E

That's an A major triad above G7.

Those upper notes create extensions/alterations.

Jazz pianists often think of complex voicings as:

basic chord underneath + familiar triad above.

These are called upper-structure triads.

We'll return to them much later.
