14.36Diminished chords can prolong a dominant

Another useful use:

G7 → G♯°7 → Am

Here G7 normally might resolve to C, but the bass rises:

G → G♯ → A

and we arrive at Am.

Or:

C → C♯°7 → Dm → G7 → C

Diminished harmony keeps the motion alive.
