14.39Diminished chord underneath a held melody

Suppose melody holds E.

Try:

C → C♯°7 → Dm

C has E.

C♯°7 also contains E.

Then Dm can contain F, or depending on melody timing the E can become a 9th over Dm.

So the harmony changes dramatically while the melody can remain nearly static.

Very useful for reharmonization.
