Jazz reharmonization often becomes much clearer when you stop seeing exotic chord labels and instead hear chromatic lines.

For example:

C → E7 → Am

looks like a chromatic chord substitution.

But hear:

G → G♯ → A.

Suddenly the logic is obvious.
