31.28Augmentation + reharmonization

Suppose original phrase had one chord per bar.

If you double phrase duration, you gain harmonic space.

Now you can insert:

• secondary dominants
• ii–V
• passing diminished chords
• bass motion

without making harmony overly busy.

This is a major arranging strategy.
