Take one tune.

Step 1

Identify the original pulse.

Mark the melodic landmarks.

Step 3

Choose new meter/grouping.

Step 4

Decide where new downbeats should fall.

Step 5

Rewrite rhythm only.

Step 6

Play melody alone until it feels natural.

Step 7

Add simple harmony.

Step 8

Design accompaniment pattern.

Step 9

Adjust phrase length if needed.

Step 10

Only then add reharmonization.

This prevents harmonic complexity from hiding a weak rhythmic transformation.
