5.38Practice with "Happy Birthday"

Don't worry about reproducing a canonical harmonization yet.

Use only:

I, IV, V7

in C:

C, F, G7

Play the melody.

At important points ask:

  • Does C still fit?
  • Does F make sense?
  • Does G7 create useful tension before returning to C?

Then add:

Am

Am = A C E

and:

Dm

Dm = D F A

as alternatives.

The point is not to find "the answer."

It is to hear why one choice creates a different direction from another.
