Spend about 25–30 minutes.

A. Basic function

In C, G, F, and D play:

I → IV → V7 → I

Say the functions aloud:

tonic → predominant → dominant → tonic

B. ii–V–I

Play:

Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7

Am7 → D7 → Gmaj7

Gm7 → C7 → Fmaj7

Don't worry about speed.

Listen to the same functional motion.

C. Deceptive cadence

In C:

G7 → C

then:

G7 → Am

Compare.

Do the same in G:

D7 → G

then:

D7 → Em

D. Families

In C, memorize:

Tonic: C, Em, Am

Predominant: Dm, F

Dominant: G, G7, B°

Then improvise a progression by choosing one chord from each family.

E. Harmonic rhythm

Take:

C Am Dm G7

Play:

• one chord every 4 beats
• one chord every 2 beats
• occasionally hold one for 8 beats

Hear how pacing changes.

F. Same melody note, different harmony

Hold right-hand G.

Under it play:

C → Em → G7

Listen to G change function.

Repeat with right-hand C over:

C → Am → F

G. Create

Build your own 8-bar progression using only chords from C major.

Requirement:

• begin with tonic function
• somewhere use predominant
• somewhere use dominant
• end with G7 → C

Record it.
