16.2The easiest improvisation exercise: one note per chord

Play the chords with your left hand.

With your right hand, play one note on each chord.

For example:

Dm7 → F

G7 → B

Cmaj7 → E

So your melody is:

F → B → E

F → B → E

That's already harmony-aware improvisation.

Now try:

C → F → E

C → F → E

or:

A → B → G

A → B → G

or:

F → D → E

F → D → E

The point is not complexity.

The point is:

every note has a relationship to the current chord.
