17.59A practical embellishment hierarchy

When decorating a melody, try ideas in this order:

  1. rhythm
  2. repetition
  3. passing/neighbor tones
  4. diatonic approaches
  5. chromatic approaches
  6. enclosures
  7. octave/register changes
  8. freer paraphrase

Why rhythm first?

Because you can profoundly change interpretation without changing the melody's pitch identity.
