Homework for Module 17

Spend around 30 minutes.

A. Passing and neighbor tones

Take the C-major chord.

Create five tiny phrases using:

  • passing tones
  • upper neighbors
  • lower neighbors

Keep C harmony underneath.

B. Chromatic approaches

Approach these targets:

E, G, B, C

E, G, B, C

from:

  • semitone below
  • semitone above

Then play a chord containing the target.

C. Enclosures

Practice:

F-E♭-E

F-E♭-E

C-B♭-B

C-B♭-B

B♭-G♯-A

B♭-G♯-A

Then transpose the concept to other targets.

D. Suspension

Play:

G7 → C

while melody does:

F — F → E

F → F → E

Hear the delayed resolution.

Then create a similar suspension in G major:

D7 → G

E. Repeated-note variation

Take four repeated Gs.

Create five different rhythmic/melodic interpretations without making G disappear as the central note.

F. Motif development

Create a three-note motif.

Use:

  1. repetition
  2. sequence
  3. rhythmic displacement
  4. fragmentation
  5. register change
G. Melody transformation

Take a familiar melody.

Record:

  1. literal
  2. rhythmically varied
  3. ornamented diatonically
  4. ornamented chromatically
  5. freer personal version
H. Harmony-aware decoration

Over:

Cmaj7 → E7 → Am7 → A7 → Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7

Cmaj7 → E7 → Am7 → A7 → Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7

make these lines audible somewhere:

G → G♯ → A

G → G♯ → A

C → C♯ → D

C → C♯ → D

F → E

F → E

Decorate around them without losing the resolutions.
