Suppose phrase ends on C.

You suspect tonic.

Ask:

What happened immediately before?

Often:

G7

Then:

what happened before G7?

Maybe:

Dm or F

So you can reconstruct:

Dm → G7 → C

backward.

This is often easier than transcribing left-to-right.
