Sometimes several chords belong to one larger function.

Example:

C → Am → Dm → F → G7 → C

Functionally:

C-Am = tonic area

Dm-F = predominant area

G7 = dominant

C = tonic

Hearing these larger zones makes complex progressions simpler.
