21.3Rule 2: preserve the phrase

A cadence is not just a chord.

If the original phrase strongly resolves:

G7 → C

you can decorate that motion, but if you remove all sense of dominant → tonic, the phrase may lose its punctuation.

So ask:

What job is the original chord doing?

before replacing it.
