8.56Level 30 — tritone substitution

If a dominant is replaced by its tritone substitute:

focus on chromatic bass and guide-tone continuity.

Example:

B♭7 → E♭

substitute:

E7 → E♭.

Bass:

E → E♭.

The sound is dramatic but the function is still dominant-to-tonic-like.
