74.10Level 4 — melody reaches new chord before harmony

Suppose melody note strongly belongs to Dm7 at beat 1.

But accompaniment stays Am7 for one beat.

That melody note now becomes:

temporary extension

suspension

or tension

against old harmony.

Then the Dm7 arrives.

This is a powerful arranging device.
