We often imagine harmony as:

vertical blocks placed on a timeline.

But real performance is more flexible.

A harmonic change may consist of:

• one voice anticipating
• bass moving
• melody resolving
• inner tones following
• full voicing appearing later

So harmony is not merely vertical.

It has internal temporal structure.
