3.13Melodic minor

In traditional classical theory, ascending melodic minor raises both 6 and 7.

A natural minor:

A B C D E F G A

A B C D E F G A

A melodic minor ascending:

A B C D E F♯ G♯ A

A B C D E F♯ G♯ A

So:

1 2 ♭3 4 5 6 7

Descending, traditional classical melodic minor usually returns to natural minor:

A G F E D C B A

A G F E D C B A

This may be familiar from your classical education.
