6.15Bass movement helps reveal phrase structure
When listening by ear, sometimes chord quality is hard to identify.
Listen to the bass.
If you hear:
C → F → G → C
you already know a lot.
Even if you are unsure whether the G chord is G or G7, the root motion strongly suggests:
I → IV → V → I
So when figuring out a song, bass is often your first clue.
