In C, G, F, and D, play:

IV → I

V7 → vi

and:

a progression ending on V.

Say:

authentic

plagal

deceptive

half

as appropriate.

B. Question and answer

Create two four-bar phrases in C.

Phrase 1:

end on G7.

Phrase 2:

end on C.

Use only:

C, Am, Dm, F, G7

C. Harmonic rhythm

Use:

C – Am – Dm – G7

Play it with:

• one chord per bar
• two chords per bar
• slow beginning, faster ending

Notice how the same chord sequence changes character.

D. Reduction

Play:

C – C/E – F – F♯° – G7 – G/B – C

Then reduce mentally to:

C – F – G7 – C

Hear the skeleton beneath the decoration.

E. Phrase by ear

Choose a familiar melody.

Without sheet music:

• sing it
• locate phrase boundaries
• identify which ending sounds open
• identify which ending sounds final
• then find the tonic on piano

F. Improvisation

Use:

C | Am | Dm | G7 | C

Right hand:

make a two-bar statement.

Pause.

Make a two-bar answer.

Try to land the final phrase on C, E, or G over the C chord.
