6.19Melody also tells you where phrases end

Phrases often show one or more of these:

  • longer note
  • rhythmic pause
  • repetition
  • downward relaxation
  • return to tonic
  • cadence underneath
  • breath point if sung

So when learning a melody by ear, do not just collect pitches.

Ask:

Where would a singer naturally breathe?

That often reveals the phrase boundaries.
