7.12Melody note does not equal root

This is another big shift.

If melody note is E, the chord does not have to be E or Em.

E can sit over:

C

Am

Em

and later many more sophisticated chords.

So when harmonizing by ear, stop asking:

“What chord starts on this melody note?”

Instead ask:

“Which chord contains or supports this melody note?”

Much better question.
