7.19First harmonization strategy

When given a melody in a major key, try this sequence:

Step 1

Use only:

I

for as long as it still sounds plausible.

Step 2

When I stops fitting or becomes boring, try:

IV

Step 3

Before important return to I, try:

V7

Step 4

Add:

vi

for softer tonic-like color.

Step 5

Add:

ii

before V.

This prevents you from overcomplicating things.
