22.31Common-tone substitution

Another substitution strategy:

Replace a chord with another chord sharing important melody or inner notes.

Suppose melody = E.

Original chord:

Cmaj7.

Potential substitutes:

Am7

Fmaj7

Dm9

E7

All contain E but give it different roles.

This is not necessarily functional equivalence.

It is melody/common-tone driven.
