Suppose you play:

C C C C

C C C C

one chord each beat.

Then:

Am Am Am Am

It quickly sounds stiff.

Instead, vary:

  • rhythm
  • register
  • inversion
  • number of notes
  • density
  • silence

For example:

beat 1 bass

beat 2 partial chord

beat 3 silence

beat 4 upper chord

This can sound much more musical.
