11.10The dominant is the most flexible chord

The V7 chord carries tension, so it accepts many altered or extended notes.

Instead of plain G7:

G B D F

G B D F

you may eventually play:

  • G9
  • G13
  • G7♭9
  • G7♯9
  • G7♭13
  • altered dominant sounds

But the function remains:

G dominant wants C

So always understand the function before worrying about the color.
