A written chord:

G7

theoretically contains:

G B D F

But if bass plays G, and right hand plays:

B F

the ear hears G7 clearly.

So the player can use the remaining fingers for:

• 9ths
• 13ths
• melody
• inner movement

This is why reduced voicings are so important.
