77.107A practical pre-solo checklist

Before playing a tune, know:

1. What key/tonal center begins?
2. Where are the phrase endings?
3. Where are the major ii–V/turnaround packets?
4. What temporary keys appear?
5. Where is the strongest dominant?
6. Where is the climax likely to be?
7. How does the form return home?

Then play.

You do not need to mentally narrate this while performing.
