Take C major:

C–E–G

Move the bottom note C up one octave:

E–G–C

Same three notes.

Still C major.

But now E is on the bottom.

This is called:

first inversion.

You may see it written:

C/E

That means:

C major chord with E in the bass.

So:

C/E = E–G–C

The slash tells you the bass note.
