A. Inversions
For these chords:
C, F, G, Am, Dm
play:
root position
first inversion
second inversion
Say the bass note aloud.
B. Slash notation
Play:
C
C/E
C/G
Then:
G
G/B
G/D
Make sure the slash note is actually the lowest note.
C. Common-tone voice leading
Practice:
C → Am
F → Dm
G → Em
Try to keep shared notes physically held or nearly stationary.
D. Pop progression
Play:
C – G – Am – F
first in root positions.
Then find the smoothest voicings you can.
Don't copy my solution immediately.
Experiment.
E. ii–V–I
Play:
Dm7 → G7 → Cmaj7
First root position.
Then with compact inversions.
Listen especially to:
B → C
and:
F → E
F. Melody on top
Pick these melody notes:
G – A – A – B – C
Harmonize them respectively with:
C – Am – F – G7 – C
Choose inversions so each given melody note is the highest note.
G. Free five minutes
Use only:
C, Am, F, G
Create your own slow accompaniment.
You may:
- repeat notes
