In root position:

• C = C E G
• Am = A C E
• Dm = D F A
• G7 = G B D F
• C = C E G

This works, but the hand jumps.

Instead, use compact voicings:

• C = E G C
• Am = E A C
• Dm = F A D
• G7 = F G B D
• C = E G C

Now most notes move by step or stay where they are.

That is the sound we want.
