Try:

C → G/B → Am → E/G♯ → G → D/F♯ → F

Bass:

C → B → A → G♯ → G → F♯ → F

That is a descending chromatic line.

The chords are chosen partly to support the bass motion.

This technique appears everywhere in sophisticated arrangements.
